Common questions
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere to add page numbers?
No. The file is opened, numbered, and re-saved by your own browser — it is never sent to a server. That is also why very large documents are limited: the whole file has to fit in your browser memory.
Does this change my original file?
No. The original stays untouched on your device and a new, separate PDF is produced for you to download. Running it again with different settings re-numbers the original rather than adding a second set of numbers on top.
Can I number only part of the document?
Yes — switch Pages to "Selected pages" and enter a range like 3-12. Pages you leave out are copied through completely unchanged, with nothing drawn on them.
If I number pages 3 to 12, what numbers are printed?
Numbering runs sequentially through your selection, not through the document, so pages 3-12 starting at 1 are printed 1 to 10. If you want them to read 3 to 10 instead, set Start at to 3. This is what makes it possible to skip a cover page and still have the body start at 1.
Will the numbers cover up existing content?
The number is added as a new layer near the bottom margin; nothing already on the page is removed or moved. If your pages already have content right at the very bottom edge, the number may sit on top of it — try a different position or a smaller font size.
What happens with a password-protected PDF?
It is rejected with a clear message rather than partially processed. This tool cannot ask for or apply a password, so an encrypted PDF cannot be opened — remove the password in whatever app created it first.
