How is reading time calculated?
From your word count, assuming a 200-words-per-minute silent reading pace and a 130-words-per-minute speaking pace — both commonly cited averages, not a measurement of how you personally read or speak, so treat the time shown as a reasonable estimate rather than an exact figure.
Why don't my counts match another tool?
Word and sentence counting have no single universal standard. This tool counts a word as any run of characters separated by whitespace, and a sentence as text ending in ., !, or ? — which means abbreviations like "Mr." or "e.g." can inflate the sentence count slightly. Different tools make different tradeoffs here, so small differences between tools are expected.
Does this count hyphenated or contracted words as one or two?
As one. Counting works by splitting on whitespace, so "well-known" and "don't" each count as a single word, not two.
